Andrew Duncan

Andrew contributes to CoreSounds from the remote location of Stornoway, Western Isles, Scotland.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1962, Andrew studied music at Napier University in Edinburgh and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
In 1984 he took up the post of Principal Tuba with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, a post he held up until 2000. In 1998 Andrew gave the World Premiere of John Golland’s Tuba Concerto as a soloist with the Hallé in the Bridgewater Hall.

The first major development in his composition career was in 1994 when the Hallé Orchestra gave the premiere of his Concerto for Trombone with colleague and trombone virtuoso Andrew Berryman as soloist. He then began to arrange works for the Hallé, mainly for the regular Family Concert series. Andrew has had around thirty arrangements played by the Hallé and other professional orchestras.
Andrew's success writing and arranging for Brass Band is impressive, particularly in the Spennymore Brass in Concert competition where Andrew has won the prize for the best new arrangement or composition for five consecutive years from 1996 -2000. All these arrangements were subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 2.In July 2000 Andrew took on a major commission from the Hallé Orchestra. He wrote A Tale of Two Empires, a twenty-six minute work for large orchestra and Brass Band about the history of Manchester. The first performance took place in July 2000 with the Hallé and the Todmorden Old Band conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes. The piece received further performances in 2001.
Recently Andrew has begun to do a number of arrangements for the Warner/Chappell Brass band Series. These are all available from the Lewis Music Press .
