Hallé Orchestra musician reaches final of the UK songwriting contest

Out of more than 2500 competitors, Hallé Double Bass player Bea Schirmer was one of the 25 finalists in the Jazz category of the UK songwriting contest 2004, with her moving, soulful entry entitled "Lost Love".

Founder member and major creative force behind ALEAtronic, a cutting edge progressive music ensemble comprising a number of Hallé players, Bea has been writing music for film and theatre, as well as most of the material for ALEAtronic's debut album "First Take".

"I am absolutely thrilled that "Lost Love" reached the finals," says Bea. "I wanted to write a simple, moving song that would speak to many people. The jazz genre with its harmonic subtleties suited the mood of the song best.

As a musician and composer I am continually fascinated by the link between different genres of music. Classical music is a huge part of my life, and I draw from my day to day experience performing on stage with the Hallé and our exposure to the most fantastic music ever written when exploring other musical styles in my own compositions."

"I have always had a love of writing songs. It is very hard these days to come across good songs on the radio, no one seems to write them anymore! As a result we hear more and more covers of old classics. I feel that song writing competitions like these are extremely important for the future of popular music, as they show that there are good songs still being written today."

Bea is currently working on exiting new material for future release. She is in the middle of recording an album of her recent songs at Studio Zero dB in Chorlton, Manchester, which is also the headquarters of her production company, CoreSounds Productions.

Hallé Marketing Director Andy Ryans:" I am absolutely delighted that Bea has achieved such fantastic success. She is a talented and deeply committed symphonic musician, who I know has always enjoyed working in different styles. I'm sure we'll be hearing much more about her future career"

ALEAtronic, which consist of four Hallé musicians with over 50 years of orchestral experience between them, are about to embark on another one of Manchester City Football Club's successful 'Fit For Life' projects co-ordinated by Hallé Education as part of the BBC/Association of British Orchestras campaign 'Listen Up!', as well as working on new material as a follow up to "First Take".
