Dave studied percussion and composition at the Royal College of Music in London, England. From there he went to join the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, after which, in 1989, he was appointed Principal Percussion of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester.

He has written extensively for mallet instruments, vibraphone, marimba and percussion. Dave's works feature on many of the examinations syllabuses in the UK. He has played in numerous jazz and rock bands throughout his career and also spends a great deal of time undertaking education projects.
